This is a school house located in Reykjanesbæ, Iceland. Coordination between project participants was key and was significantly streamlined using the Trimble Connect platform. This allowed smoother approvals with architects and quick detection of clashes between ventilation systems and load-bearing structures. The project was completed on schedule. Enhanced fire safety and sound insulation requirements led to the use of concealed connections in the glued laminated timber elements.
Main Part Design OÜ was responsible for:
Development of the structural BIM model
Structural calculations, including stiffness of the house and structural connections calculations
Plan of Loads
General arrangement drawings
Structural Overview
Load-bearing exterior and interior walls
Roof structure: Glulam rafters
The building’s stiffness was ensured by transferring roof and ceiling diaphragms loads to the walls, which acted as shear walls through the action of the structural sheathing
Wall diaphragms are anchored using the Rothoblaas system hold-downs and chemical anchors
Modeling, Calculation & Coordination Tools 📐
Modeling: Tekla Structures
Calculations: Dlubal RFEM 6
Coordination: Trimble Connect, which facilitated collaboration between project participants and helped meet deadlines set by both the manufacturer and the client
In-house Tools Utilized: The following self-developed plugins were used to optimize modeling and documentation processes (available on Tekla Warehouse): MPD EDIT, MPD Timber Frame, Glulam Connections, and MPD QR Code.
